If you’re one of
the 50 million-plus Americans suffering from allergies, I don’t have to tell
you this is the worst allergy season ever. While prescription and over-the-counter
medications are enjoying stellar sales, they often cause undesired or even
dangerous side effects. If this is the
case for you, or you’re simply looking for natural allergy remedies, I have a number of suggestions.
Many ideas you’ve likely run across in your Internet searches, but I
have five that might surprise you!
A great place to
start is with a trusted homeopathic and/or herbal remedy like Clear Sinus & Ear, a Neti pot to keep your sinuses clean and clear, and a HEPA filter, air
purifier and/or humidifier to clean the air in your home. An essential oil
diffuser with eucalyptus or peppermint oil will help to clear your sinuses and
act as a natural air freshener.
When it comes to
your diet, you’ll want to steer clear of dairy products and any other foods you
may be even mildly allergic to, as they can interact with environmental
allergens to create a double whammy. Green tea and Omega 3 fatty acids (found
in cold water fish, eggs, walnuts and flax seed oil) both reduce inflammation
that can cause allergies to flare.
Ok, so here are
the five surprising ways you may be able to find relief from allergies, all of
which have no negative side effects AND actually promote overall health and
wellness.
Natural Allergy Remedies
1. Drink More Water
- Water not only keeps you hydrated, but its cleansing and can help flush out
allergens and mucous naturally.
2. Try
Acupuncture – By stimulating points outside the body, acupuncture changes or
initiates reactions inside the body, in this case quieting the immune system
where allergic reactions begin.
3. Get a Massage
– Relaxation lowers blood pressure, improves circulation and lowers stress
levels which ease your immune response of sneezing and wheezing. Plus it feels
so good!
4. Yoga – While
the benefits of yoga are cumulative, there is a breathing exercise called
breath of fire or Kapalabhati breath that consists of a series of rapid,
forceful exhalations and passive inhalations. This can clear out the nasal
passages where allergens lurk, and thus offer relief. Yoga poses such as
shoulder stands can also help clear nasal passages, where backbends like bridge
pose open up and expand the lungs.
5. An Apple a Day
(sort of…) – Every day mix a tablespoon of raw, organic apple cider vinegar with
a tablespoon of local, raw honey into a cup of warm water and enjoy. Local
honey contains local pollens and will help your body build a tolerance to these
allergens, while the apple cider vinegar reduces inflammation and block’s the
body’s histamine reaction.
