If you have
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), or that extremely uncomfortable and sometimes
excruciating feeling of needing to get up and walk or move your legs when you
sit or lie down for extended periods of time, then keep reading.
While there is no
definitive cause of RLS, it’s believed to be related to a dopamine imbalance,
dopamine being the chemical in our body that sends messages to control muscle
movement. RLS is often hereditary, but can be triggered by nerve damage in the
hands and feet caused by diabetes or alcoholism, by an iron deficiency or
kidney failure. If you’ve ruled out
these serious health issues and still aren’t finding relief for your restless
legs, here are some alternative approaches for you to try. Unlike medications
often prescribed for RLS, they aren’t habit forming, and they won’t make you
drowsy or loopy.
Restless Leg
1. Try the
herbal/homeopathic approach - Clear Restless Leg Relief contains a unique blend
of herbs formulated to work in combination with active homeopathic
ingredients to provide safe and effective relief from muscle spasms, cramping,
and symptoms associated with Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). This formula relaxes
muscles, providing relief from spasms and cramps, and has an analgesic effect
for pain relief. Clear Restless Leg Relief is not habit forming and won’t cause
drowsiness.
2. Acupuncture –
In acupuncture, small needles are inserted into specific points of the body to
open blocked energy channels, reduce muscle tension and encourage the release
of painkilling endorphins. Acupuncture can also help stimulate parts of the
brain involved in RLS to help alleviate symptoms.
3. Yoga - A recent study published in the Journal of
Alternative Medicine reported that 10 women with restless leg syndrome who
completed an 8 week yoga program all experienced a marked decrease in RLS
symptoms and reported improved sleep and mood. With all the other wonderful
“side effects” yoga has to offer, it’s definitely worth a try!
4. Massage – Now
you have one more reason to go get a massage. Massage therapy increases blood
flow, reduces blood pressure and can help relieve and prevent restless leg
syndrome symptoms. You can also give your legs a massage before bed to help
prevent restless legs during sleep.
5. Hot and/or
cold treatment – Using hot or cold packs – or alternating the two – can help
reduce your restless leg symptoms. Experiment with each hot and cold, and then alternating
the two to see what works best for you.
