According the
National Headache Foundation, nearly half of the adult population suffers
headaches, while more than 37 million Americans are diagnosed with migraine,
making them one of the most prevalent health issues of our time. To wrap up my
series of blog posts for Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, I want to
give those of you suffering from these often debilitating conditions some
additional resources to help you explore, minimize, prevent and hopefully
relieve your headaches or migraines.
1. Organizations:
When you’re suffering from chronic headaches or migraines and need information
and ideas, a great place to start is with organizations dedicated to headache
and migraine research and support. The National Headache Foundation
(http://www.headaches.org) has the most extensive collection of information and
resources available including a physician finder, tools, webinars, education,
research findings, news, and headache topic sheets ranging from abdominal
headaches to weekend headaches. The American Headache & Migraine
Association (http://www.ahmablog.com) has a blog, a bookstore and an extensive
support community.
2. Specialists:
If you have severe or chronic headaches or migraines, it’s important to see a
headache specialist or neurologist who can help you explore and hopefully
identify the cause(s) of your pain. While headaches and migraines are still
somewhat of a medical mystery, there is more information and understanding of
them than ever before. Other specialists that may be able to help are
acupuncturists and biofeedback specialists.
3. Books: There
are a number of books dedicated to headache and migraine relief. Heal Your
Headache: The 1-2-3 Program by David Buchholz, a professor at the Johns Hopkins
School of Medicine, is a good choice because he offers a method of finding
relief that has proven successful for many. Another book, Trigger Point Therapy
for Headaches and Migraines: Your Self-Treatment Workbook for Pain Relief by
Valerie DeLaune, a licensed acupuncturist and certified neuromuscular
therapist, has received rave reviews for helping readers find headache and
migraine relief naturally.
